Youth suicide rates are on the rise in the U.S. In 2007, the youth suicide rate was 6.8 per 100,000 people. It rose to 10.6 by 2017. Use the tips in https://www.pbs.org/newshour/health/youth-suicide-rates-are-on-the-rise-in-the-u-s to start talking about it with your kids.

Choose gifts that promote creativity and interaction:
Your time and attention are the best gifts you can give your child. But when considering material gifts, think about screen-free items that allow creativity and interaction. Gifts like hand puppets, balls, crafts, jump ropes and table games are great for children ages five to nine. For older children, gifts related to hobbies and scientific activities are ideal. And books are always a great option for children of all ages.

Help your teen ask critical thinking questions:
Educators talk a lot about critical thinking. Simply put, anytime students think things over, asking questions in their minds, they are thinking critically. To help your teen think critically about something, have him stop and ask himself: Does it make sense? Is it supported by facts? If it's an opinion, does he agree? Urge him to keep an open mind and not accept or dismiss a new idea without thinking it through.

¡No espere!

Don't wait! Start college preparations now:
Thinking about college is not just for high school seniors. No matter your student's age, there are important ways she can prepare. Middle schoolers should work on developing study skills. Ninth graders should be making a four-year plan of courses to fulfill college admission requirements. Tenth graders should be taking rigorous courses and preparing to take the SAT or ACT. Eleventh graders should do all of the above and should be researching (and visiting, if possible) the colleges they like most.

What to do when the 'fourth-grade reading slump' strikes:
It's common for kids to hit a reading slump around fourth grade. The books get harder and the students' concentration decreases. To ensure that your child keeps reading, continue to read with him. Your involvement shows him that reading is important. Look for reading materials that match your child's interests. Limit his screen time, and let your child be bored sometimes. He just might pick up a book.

Encourage a reluctant reader to try something short:
Too many students never learn to see reading as something they can do for fun. To encourage your teen to read for pleasure, suggest he try reading a collection of short stories or poems. If he doesn't like one poem or story, he can move on to another. If he finds one he likes, suggest that he read other works by the same author. Your teen may also enjoy reading a biography of a writer whose works he likes.
