Try a different kind of time-out to end arguments with your teen:
Disciplining your child with a time-out may have worked when he was young. But now that he's outgrown his tricycle, it may seem silly. So give yourself a time-out instead. If you are in an argument with your teen, calmly say, "I am not going to argue with you about this." Then leave the room. You don't have to stay away long. Ten or 15 minutes will send the message you want: You are the parent, and you are in charge.

Keep your child's brain active over break
Winter break is a time for fun. But that doesn't mean your child can't also keep her mind sharp and continue learning. Encourage her to read for pleasure. You can help her find books by authors she likes or have her reread old favorites. If your child receives holiday gifts, have her write thank-you notes. Spend some time playing board games as a family that require math or higher-level thinking skills.
