Restating boosts science comprehension:
Reading science is not like reading a novel. Your teen can improve his science comprehension if he translates the text and formulas he reads into his own words. Encourage him to approach the sample problems in his textbook the same way: After reading a problem, he should explain each step in his own words and write the explanation down. Then he can draw a diagram to illustrate the problem.

Discuss what to do after making a poor choice:
Sometimes, your child will make poor choices. It's what she does next that counts. Teach her these steps for recovering from a mistake: First, admit it. "I watched TV instead of doing my math." Next, accept the consequences. "I'll have to do my math and not watch TV this week." Then, make up for it. "I'll use that TV time to master math skills." Finally, learn from the experience. "Next time I'll do my homework first!"

Four more days until Spring Break (March 9-13) kicks off for students! Donβt forget that students get a bonus day off on Friday 3/6 (teacher in service day).

Congratulations to Gary Miller Jr. on his .500 batting average at the teamβs recent tournament!

Black History Month Fact of the Day: In addition to politics, Condoleezza Rice is an accomplished pianist who has performed with Yo-Yo Ma and Aretha Franklin. She entered the University of Denver at the age of 15 and earned her Ph.D. by age 26.

Make the most of extra time:
Leap year's extra day is the perfect day to teach your teen to turn small bits of extra time into study opportunities. So if dinner will be in 10 minutes, have your teen spend the time reviewing Spanish vocabulary. If she's going out with friends, have her solve five math problems first. Such short sessions won't replace a longer study time, but your teen will probably find she's using her time more effectively.

Learn a new word for a special occasion:
2020 is a leap year, and February has an extra day. Teach your child another name for leap year: "Intercalary year." Intercalary means "inserted into a calendar," or "inserted between other things or parts." How many times today can your family use this new word in a sentence?

Black History Month Fact of the Day: African American Matthew Henson accompanied Robert Edwin Peary on the first successful U.S. expedition to the North Pole, in 1909. In 2000, Henson was posthumously awarded the National Geographic Society's Hubbard Medal.

Partner with teachers to work for your teen:
Teachers and parents have a common goal: student success. When you speak to your teen's teachers, let them know you consider them your partners. Express your appreciation for what they do to help your teen learn. Then, share any concerns and listen to the teachers' viewpoints. Ask what you can do to help your teen succeed in school, then together, make plans to address any issues.

Add to responsibility one day at a time:
Here's a game to play with a calendar to encourage your child to act responsibly. Make a list of important behaviorsβgetting up on time, keeping his bedroom cleanβand let your child add a letter of the word "responsible" to the calendar each day he demonstrates them. When the calendar says R-E-S-P-O-N-S-I-B-L-E, do something special together as a reward.
