Attention Falcon parents, in the coming weeks I will be posting activities for you and your child. These are not required by the district, but are activities you can complete with your students to curb boredom and keep them engaged! Look for the Parent Corner logo!

Be flexible when setting curfews
Curfews are most effective when parents and teens both have a say in setting them. They should also be flexible, to match the responsibility shown by the teens. Agree with your teen on a "regular curfew" for typical nights. Then you can consider "special-event curfews," which might be earlier or later depending on the circumstances. Agree that your teen will call you if he thinks he'll be late or if his plans change.

Use report cards as conversation starters
Whether your child's report card is great or shows a need for improvement, use it to enhance your communication with your child and the school. First, talk to your child. Were there grades that surprised him? Made him proud? What does he want to improve? Then, if you have questions, contact the teacher to discuss them. Two-way communication strengthens teamworkβ¦and that helps your child.

Start a new tradition with your teen
It may not seem like your teen wants to spend time with you, but studies show teens crave connection with their parents. To make sure you have time with your teen, start some rituals together, like going out for a weekend snack or breakfast. Get her involved in making family plans, and sometimes, plan around her interests. Is your teen into sports? Say "There's a game on Saturday I'd love to watch with you."

Hi Falcons! Donβt forget to visit your childβs campus from 10 to 4 each day next week to pick up their Chromebook. We have added a third distance learning option for students with their own devices. Visit Royal-ISD.net for complete details.

Take steps before leaving your preteen at home alone
While young children should never be left at home alone, sometimes parents leave preteens on their own for short periods of time. Before you leave your child home alone, make sure she knows how to reach you. Review what to do in case of fire. Discuss how she should handle phone calls and a knock at the door. Talk about who, if anyone, is allowed in the house and whether your child is allowed to go out.

Please note that the "without internet option" requires students to check out a district issued Chromebook. If you have internet AND your student has their own laptop or Chromebook, they may use that instead of the district Chromebook.

Tag someone making a difference as we navigate these challenging times. We say thank you to teachers, custodians, cafeteria workers, administrators, and parents! Let's not forget about the medical professionals who are so selfless!

Share a four-step approach to essay tests
Teens who are unsure how to approach essay tests are often anxious about them. Share four steps with your teen to build his confidence: 1. Schedule time. Three essays in 40 minutes means 10 minutes for each with 10 minutes to check work. 2. Read the question carefully and circle key words. 3. Make a quick outline by jotting down ideas and deciding how they fit together. 4. Start by writing a quick introduction and conclusion.

Strengthen writing skills and family ties with a newsletter
Are your relatives far away? Your child can keep everyone updated on family activities and improve his writing skills at the same time by putting together a family newsletter. Have him write letters or emails to ask relatives for news, family stories and photos. Then he can use a computer at home or at the library to compile their replies. He'll gain typing, writing and layout skills, and the joy of keeping the family connected.
