After five years of dedicated leadership, Royal ISD Superintendent Rick Kershner has announced his decision to retire in December 2025. Throughout his tenure, Kershner has played a pivotal role in advancing the districtโs mission, fostering student success, and strengthening community engagement.
โThis journey has been filled with meaningful work, personal growth, and, most importantly, the privilege of collaborating with an extraordinary group of people who make Royal ISD so special,โ said Kershner. โI am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together and I am grateful for the unwavering dedication of our students, staff, and community.โ
Under Kershnerโs leadership, Royal ISD has achieved several milestones, including:

Implementation of Capturing Kidsโ Hearts, earning National Showcase Recognition two years in a row

Development of the districtโs Strategic Direction, setting a clear vision for the future

Passage of the 2023 Bond, securing resources for enhanced facilities and programs

Hosting the 2025 Future Ready Superintendent Leadership Network meeting, positioning Royal ISD as a leader in innovation and excellence in education
While his decision to retire is bittersweet, Kershner remains committed to ensuring a smooth transition in leadership. Over the coming months, Royal ISD will work closely with students, staff, and the community to identify and onboard the districtโs next superintendent.
