Chores teach useful lessons in responsibility:
Studies show that kids who do chores at home are more likely to achieve in school. One reason is that chores help kids develop responsibility. Give your child a choice of chores to do. Teach her how to tackle the tasks one step at a time. Then praise her efforts with specifics: "You made your bed neatly. Thanks for helping to make our home tidy."

Do you know the school principal's name? The name of your teen's counselor? The nurse? It's never too late to meet the key people at school. One good way is to volunteer for a school activity that is important to your teen. While you're at it, take time to talk with school personnel. The more you know the educators who work with your teen, the smoother her journey through school will be.

Create some simple family rituals with your teen:
Family rituals bring family members together and give students a sense of belonging. Ask your teen to help you create some rituals to celebrate your family's important events. They don't have to be elaborate; they should just help your family enjoy time together. If rituals can be outdoors, like going for a hike to celebrate a birthday, that's great! Your teen will know your family stands together, even in a great big world.

Many students struggle with a common reading problem. They can recognize the individual words in a passage, but they have trouble understanding the overall meaning. Help your child learn to visualize. When he reads to you, describe the images that occur to you. Or, help him draw pictures or diagrams of the story's action. You could even act out the story, and have your child describe what he sees.

Big changes at school, such as a new semester with tough classes or a move to a new school, can stress teens out. If this is the case for your teen, consider asking the school to connect him with a more experienced student. A student mentor could study with your teen and help him build skills, or develop your teen's school connection by showing him around and suggesting some after-school activities.

When kids talk about reading, they get more excited about it. They think about what they read more deeply. To encourage your child to talk about what she's reading, ask a few questions, such as: Did the story turn out the way you thought it would? If you were the main character, what would you have done differently? How would the story be different if it took place where we live?
