University of Houston Track Meet - Participants to meet at 8am

For the best final draft, your teen should plan to revise:
Professional writers know that writing can almost always be improved in some way. If your teen has a paper to write, encourage him to get an early start. This will give him time to make several drafts before he has to turn it in. You can offer to read his work, but avoid general criticism. Instead, give specific, constructive comments, like "Perhaps you can add a sentence to explain your point in the third paragraph."

There is no such thing as safe tobacco use
Many parents believe that their kids are too smart to smoke. But youth tobacco use is rising, and e-cigarettes (vaping devices) lead the list of products. Vaping is linked to a recent outbreak of deadly lung disease. Vapers are also more likely to become smokers, and life expectancy for smokers is 10 years shorter than for nonsmokers. Make it clear to your child that you do not allow tobacco use of any kind.

1/18/2020 - FFA Progress Show. Good luck!

Link your child's interests to possible careers:
Exploring careers is fun for elementary schoolers, and it helps them link learning to life. Help your child think about future careers by noticing his interests and supporting them. Give an animal lover a library book about a vet. A budding astronaut might like to try out a telescope. Your child's choices may differ from yours, but who knows? With your support, your little inventor may really build a better mousetrap.

Short-term goals add up to long-term progress:
The best way to accomplish a long-term goal is to set and meet short-term goals along the way. If your teen has a goal of being a better student, for example, help her think of something she can accomplish this week that will help. She might keep to a regular study schedule or make an effort to participate in each class. At the end of the week, she can assess her progress and set another goal.

Show your teen that studying science is important:
What could make science education stronger? Many students say it's support from their parents. Encourage interest in science by talking about why science matters in life. Support your teen's efforts on homework and projects. If possible, visit museums, labs and research facilities so your teen can see science in action. And ask the school what you can do to support the science program.

Challenge your child to a writing game:
Good writing unites individual ideas into an overall whole. To help your child practice, give her a pack of index cards and have her write the name of a thing or an idea on each card. Then have her draw four cards and see if she can use all the ideas in a single sentence. For example, if she had "toys," "trip," "sunny" and "teachers," she might write, "On sunny days, teachers let students take their toys on school trips."
