Challenge your teen to think critically:
Take this challenge with your teen: Every day for a week, each of you spend 15 minutes reading the editorials in a daily newspaper. Then, pick a time to discuss what you've read. Do you agree or disagree with those opinions? Why or why not? Did the authors consider all the aspects of the arguments? Reading something and then analyzing it is the basis of critical thinking. And critical thinking reinforces learning.

Ask questions that promote honesty: To get your child into the habit of being honest, praise her honesty. Ask if she did an assigned chore. If she did and says yes, praise her for her work and for her honesty. If she says she didn't do it, praise her honesty and then ask her to do the chore. If she says yes when she didn't do it, ask why she lied. Keep asking questions; your child will probably decide it's easier to tell the truth in the first place.

Great students (and parents) are far from perfect:
Trying for excellence is healthy and motivating. Insisting on perfection is unrealistic and stressful. If either you or your teen is a perfectionist, try something new together: adopting a realistic attitude about mistakes. Mistakes don't mean you are a failure. They mean you're human. They can also mean that you are trying to learn something.

Sign here to encourage homework responsibility:
Sometimes, kids "forget" to tell their parents about a school assignment. Usually, asking them to write down what they must do for each class solves the problem. But a few kids may then start erasing assignments from their notebooks. If this happens, ask your child's teacher to sign each day's assignments vertically across your child's writing. That way, there will be no mistake about what's due.

What do you and your child have in common?
As children grow, their interests change. To maintain a connection, parents need to find new ways to talk, listen and be with their kids. One good way is to find an interest you and your child share: making model rockets, biking, playing board games, baking, etc. Whatever it is, make time to do it with him. Communication will flow easily when you both can share in and discuss an enjoyable activity.

Teach accountability with family community service:
If your teen breaks a rule, such as a curfew, try a "community service" technique to help her take responsibility for her actions. Add up the time her misbehavior cost the family. It might include hours spent worrying because she was late and time lost from a planned activity. Then have your teen spend the same amount of time doing "family community service": cleaning out a closet, caring for a sibling, running errands, etc.

Share a simple system for remembering reading:
Studying with the R-C-R-C method can help children remember what they read. Teach your child these four steps: Read: Have her read aloud to herself. Cover: She should put a piece of paper over the passage. Remember: Ask her to explain what she read in her own words (if she can't do this, have her try a shorter passage). Check: Your child should reread the material to see if she remembered it right.

Step in to keep your teen out of gangs:
A gang is a youth group with a difference: It exists to promote violence and illegal acts. To discourage gang involvement, make sure you know where your teen is and with whom. "Going out" should have a purpose; just hanging out on the street often leads to trouble. One top reason kids join gangs is to feel they belong, so make it clear that your teen can always turn to you.
