Hand some decisions over to your teen: Making a wise decision involves choosing the best possible course of action. It can be hard to let go of this part of the process, but it's important for your teen to take responsibility for her choices. So help her think about her options and their consequences, then leave the decision up to her. If she chooses wisely, praise her. If she chooses poorly, help her see how she can avoid that mistake in the future. http://niswc.com/36aLC320271

A sick day is for getting well, not having fun: When illness strikes, you may need to keep your child at home. Make sure that she gets the care she needs, but don't make staying home such a treat that she will want to miss more school. Instead of filling the day with screen time, read together. This is the perfect time to dive into a longer book. And if your child will be out for more than a day or two, ask her teacher how to get the work she's missing. http://niswc.com/16aLC320271

Teens deserve some privacy: Like adults, teens need privacy. So, treat your teen as you would like to be treated. You wouldn't want your teen to burst through your door without knocking, to snoop through your stuff or listen in on your phone calls. It is important to stay in tune with your teen, so you can detect problems. But as long as your teen is acting responsibly and things are going well, give him some time alone. http://niswc.com/36aKC320271

Family meals nourish important connections: It isn't always easy for busy families to sit down to dinner together each day. Yet experts say that eating meals as a family is an important way for parents to keep the lines of communication open with their children. And when your child helps you prepare and clean up, too, you'll have even more time for some great conversation. So, if you can't eat dinner together, spend extra time over breakfast! http://niswc.com/16aKC320271

Encourage the right approach to volunteering: Your teen will get more out of volunteering if she remembers to be flexible, responsible and persistent. Every experience can teach her something, but it may take a few tries before she finds a perfect fit. Remind your teen that a volunteer job is a real job; she needs to show up when she says she will. And she should keep in mind that lower-level positions can lead to great things down the road. http://niswc.com/36aJC320271

When you can't volunteer, perhaps Grandpa can: Working parents don't always have the time during the day to volunteer at school. But students and the school benefit from volunteer efforts by any adult family members. Many schools welcome grandparents as volunteers. If your child doesn't have a grandparent available, perhaps his aunts, uncles or godparents could get involved. Ask your child's teacher how these volunteers can help. http://niswc.com/16aJC320271

Add a new dimension to learning: Even the most studious teens get bored with schoolwork sometimes. That's when you can add a little spice to learning. If your teen is reading a novel or a play, look for a movie version or a live performance you can watch together. Cook food together from the era or region he's studying in history. To bring science home, ask your teen's teacher for experiments you can do that illustrate what's going on in class. http://niswc.com/36aIC320271

Provide an introduction to social skills: Your child will feel more confident in social situations at school if she knows how to introduce herself and others. Help her practice by having family members sit in a circle. Each person should introduce himself (Hi, I'm Scott). Then have family members introduce the person to their left and say something about that person (This is my brother, Eric. He likes to play soccer and wear high-top sneakers.). http://niswc.com/16aIC320271
