A strategy for pilots works for students, too:
Before an airplane takes off, the pilot runs through a checklist to be sure everything is ready. Encourage your teen to make his own checklist and run through it before taking off for school each day. Does he have his backpack, homework, lunch, planner, gym shoes, signed note? Suggest using checklists throughout the day, too. What does your teen need for each class? To bring home from school?

Play the Too Much game with your child:
Sometimes enough is enough. That's when it's time to play the Too Much game. Tell your child: "When I say 'too much,' you say something that's good in an appropriate amount, but not when you have too much. Then say what bad thing comes from too much." Your child might say, "Food is good, but eating too much is unhealthy." Take turns and have some fun: Too much bathing might wash your skin off!

Word parts provide clues to meaning:
When your teen runs into words in her daily reading that she doesn't know, have her break them down into parts. Does she know what any of the parts mean? For example, if she knows that "sub" means under or below, she will have an important clue to a word like "subterranean," and she may be able to guess the rest from the surrounding words.

Cheaters cheat themselves out of learning:
Most students admit to cheating at one time or another. It's important to help your teen understand that it's the cheater who is hurt most by cheating. Explain that while cheating may seem to have immediate benefits, the long-term damage is devastating: Your teen will be a liar and won't know the material for future tests, won't get needed help, and when caught, will face severe consequences.

Studies show that American students tend to do poorly in geography. Here's a game to help your child learn where places are. When your child is in the car, make her the "license-plate lookout." She should write down the out-of-state license plates she sees. When you get home, help her locate the states on a map or globe and let her mark each one with a sticker. Can she collect all the states?
