Support responsible learning: To be responsible students, children must take the job seriously. For that, they need their parents' support. Make learning a priority in your family's life: Visit the library, explore new places, take nature walks. Establish routines that make study an expected part of each day. Encourage your child to keep trying when homework is tough. And when she has questions, show her how to find the answers. http://niswc.com/16bUC320271

Reduce conflict by discussing expectations, consequences: Teens deserve more freedom than they had when they were younger. They should also take more responsibility for their behavior. But they still need rules, and that can lead to conflict with parents. To keep it to a minimum, involve your teen in setting expectations. Make expectations specific and clear, and agree on what the consequences will be if she doesn't meet them. Then stick to both. http://niswc.com/36bUC320271

Share a journal and build a writing connection: When kids have time to think about what they want to say, they sometimes share their deepest thoughts. Try sharing a journal with your child. Glue a picture of the two of you on a notebook, then write something positive about your child. It might be about how hard he's trying in school or how he makes you laugh. Leave it for him to read. The next day, it is his turn to write to you. Keep it up all year! http://niswc.com/16bTC320271

A strategy for pilots works for students, too: Before an airplane takes off, the pilot runs through a checklist to be sure everything is ready. Encourage your teen to make his own checklist and run through it before taking off for school each day. Does he have his backpack, homework, lunch, planner, gym shoes, signed note? Suggest using checklists throughout the day, too. What does your teen need for each class? To bring home from school? http://niswc.com/36bTC320271
