Royal Lady Falcons suffered a loss on Friday against Needville, but they kept fighting until the end and Jessica Aguilar scored off a free kick for us in the second half. Way to fight, ladies!

Christi Ginn from RISD Communications here, reporting from the annual Texas School Public Relations Association conference. Iβm here learning about new and fun ways to promote Royal and share all the fantastic news about our students! Iβm so excited to put it all into practice for our community! Use three jars to teach money management:
Give your child the savings habit by having him divide his money into three jars. The first jar is for change he can spend when he wants on what he wants (as long as it's allowed). The second jar is for saving for more expensive items that may take a few weeks or months to afford. The last jar is for long-term savings, for college, for example.

Dip into your teen's reading:
One way to give your student a more in-depth understanding of what he's reading is to read the material yourself. Pick up the article or book he's reading. Read the school-assigned novels. Then, talk with your teen about how the material connects to something in your life. Share your ideas, and ask him to do the same. Did you like or dislike the same things? Why or why not?

Black History Month Fact of the Day: Thomas Andrew Dorsey, considered the "Father of Gospel Music," was known for his works. His most famous composition, "Take My Hand, Precious Lord," was recorded by the likes of Elvis Presley and Mahalia Jackson.

Journaling about problems can help teens find answers:
If your teen is trying to figure out how to handle a problem she's facing, suggest that she think it through in a journal. Tell her to write down the solutions she's considering and what she thinks might happen as a result of each option. Then she can record what she decides. Later, she can reread her thoughts and add notes to herself for the future. Did her solution work? What would she do differently next time?

Emphasize the difference between fact and opinion:
In order to think critically about what she reads, your child must learn to separate fact from opinion. For practice, give your child a newspaper opinion column on a subject that interests her. Cut off the headline. Ask your child to read the piece and underline the facts in red and the opinions in blue. Then have her write her own headline. How does it compare to the original?

Black History Month Fact of the Day: At a time when universities did not typically offer financial assistance to black athletes, African American football star Ernie Davis was offered more than 50 scholarships.

Community event!

Congratulations to the Wharton Tigers for earning 4th place with victory over Royal 68-50. Good luck in the playoffs!

Black History Month Fact of the Day: Paul Cuffee, a philanthropist, ship captain and Quaker, supported a return to Africa for black citizens, transported 38 free African Americans to Sierra Leone in 1815. He also founded one of the first American integrated schools in 1797.

Build skills that lead to test success:
Whether they are studying for a driver's license or a biology test, teens need skills in planning, time management and organization in order to do well on exams. Encourage your teen to start planning for the end of unit test at the beginning of each unit. He should set aside regular time to review; cramming doesn't work. Filing quizzes, notes and worksheets by subject in a binder keeps them handy for study.

Five questions improve reading comprehension:
Who? What? When? Where? Why? Teach your child to keep these questions in mind while reading, and he will begin to read more carefully and understand more of what he reads. What happened where in the story? Who was involved? When did it happen? Why was it written? Talk with him about his answers. If he can't answer the questions, have him read the passage again.
