Falcon Topic of the Week: Self Care – Helping Others

Research shows that doing good is a great way to practice self-care. The positive benefits of volunteering have been well documented. The internet provides a wealth of opportunities to help and support others while practicing social distancing. Here are some ideas:

  • Participate in "Color A Smile", a nonprofit organization that distributes cheerful drawings to senior citizens, US troops, and anyone in need of a smile.
  • Donate blood!
  • FreeRice.com is a website where users play educational games involving various subjects and fight against world hunger at the same time. For every question answered correctly, 10 grains of rice are donated to the United Nations World Food Progamme to combat world hunger.
  • ALONE Support & Befriending Service provides companionship to the elderly. You can become a telephone volunteer where you call and check-in at least two hours each week.
  • Support your local food bank.

  • We all know of folks in our families and friends that are in assisted living, retirement communities, and nursing homes. Carve out some time, pick up the phone, or better yet, use Facetime, Skype, or other videoconferencing apps to visit with these folks face to face. Give them something to smile about. Let them know you miss them and that you love them. Make them feel important. If you know of someone that could use a phone call, please call the Waller County Sheriff's Office at 979.826.8282

Get creative! Think of ways to help your neighbors "from a distance"!
