Last week was an incredibly exciting and busy week for the Royal Marching Sound Machine Band! The band experienced numerous moments of recognition, performance, and service that highlighted their dedication and talent.
On Thursday, April 26th, the band was honored by the Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) Music Department, which recognized their outstanding contributions to the school’s music program. They were also privileged to open for the PVAMU Wind Ensemble, which performed beautifully and set a high standard for our students. During the event, our esteemed Band Director, Mr. Gary Miller, was celebrated as an Esteemed Alumnus. He received well-deserved praise for his hard work and the remarkable accomplishments he has achieved with RISD Fine Arts, inspiring our students and community alike.
The excitement continued on Friday, April 27th, when the Sound Machine Band traveled to the Hangar Unity Center to assist with a community food distribution. The students did an amazing job helping to get food boxed, bagged, sorted, and passed out to community members—all in record time! Their efforts showcased their commitment to service and making a positive impact beyond the band room.
The week’s momentum carried into Saturday, April 28th, as the Royal Jazz Band competed in its first-ever jazz band competition. They earned superior ratings in the Novice category, showcasing their incredible talent and teamwork. The band sounded phenomenal, and their performance was truly outstanding! Special recognition was given to Mr. Joseph Turner, who received the Spirit of Jazz Award for his exceptional Bari Sax performance, a testament to his dedication and skill.
Later that evening, the Royal Marching Sound Machine hosted its annual band banquet, a special event where students were celebrated for their achievements and dedication. The band was recognized for maintaining another sweepstakes award-winning year. During the banquet, the Royal Jazz Band performed alongside guest musicians Mr. Roderick Davenport, a talented saxophonist, and Matthew Ford, a skilled drummer, creating an unforgettable musical experience for all in attendance.
Looking ahead, the band is preparing to march in the historic Battle of Flowers Parade on May 2nd in San Antonio. This will be their first time participating in this parade, which has been a tradition for over 135 years. Created to honor and remember the soldiers who fought for Texas independence, the parade is a significant event, and we are proud to represent Royal ISD in this historic celebration.
Following the parade, the band will embark on their spring trip to Six Flags San Antonio on Saturday, May 3rd. This overnight trip promises fun, team bonding, and memorable experiences for our students as they enjoy a day at the amusement park.
It has been a remarkable week for the Royal High School Band, filled with achievements, service, recognition, and exciting opportunities. We are proud of our students and staff for their hard work and look forward to more success in the weeks to come!
