Royal SkillsUSA Advancing Members to State Competition

The Royal SkillsUSA Chapter competed various weekends in February, at the District 9 SkillsUSA Competition at multiple locations around the Houston area. Royal came away with many awards, medals, and trophies! In all, a grand total of about 29 students have qualified for the State Competition in Corpus Christi, March 29 through April 1, 2023. 

The Royal Arts, Audio/Video Production Department competed in multiple A/V contests including, Advertising Design, Quiz Bowl, Photography, Customer Service, Prepared Speech, and Photography Job Exhibit. This year we have the District Champion in Advertising Design! Gabriel Velasquez came away with the gold medal designing multiple creative designs for a company/event. Gabriel also competed in Prepared Speech. The Quiz Bowl team earned a bronze medal this year. Team members include Layla Thompson, Elisha Glover, Elizabeth Moreland, Nancy Cruz, Kimberly Pedraza, and Gabriel Velasquez. Elizabeth Moreland competed in Photography for the first time and earned a bronze medal. Elisha Glover competed in Photography and Customer Service and represented Royal SkillsUSA very well. Layla Thompson competed in Photography Portrait Job Exhibit and earned Superior Rating advancing her portrait to the State competition.

The Royal Automotive Department competed in SkillsUSA Automotive at San Jacinto Jr. College. Unfortunately, they did not qualify for state, but hope next year we can qualify for state competitions.

The Royal Cosmetology Department competed in multiple Cosmetology programs that include both Live competition and Project Exhibit. The contest included Barbering, Day and Evening Job Exhibit, Fantasy Job Exhibit, Men's Classic Hair Cutting Job Exhibit, and Womens Color and Cut Job Exhibit. District winners headed to State for Barbering are Adalberto Tellez 1st place, Day and Evening Job Exhibit 1st place winners Sandra Montalvo, Xitlaly Larios, Yoselyn Arriaga and Daysy Cortez. Fantasy Job Exhibit 1st place winners Dulce Hernandez, Jessica Calvillo and Peyton Fontenot. Womens Color and Cut 1st place Winner Zunaira Noman. Men’s Classic HairCut Job Exhibit 1st place winner Adalberto Tellez.

The Royal Health Science Department competed in multiple Health Science SkillsUSA contests February 18, 2023.   These contests included medical terminology, exhibition of technical Health Science Skills, and medical math.    Royal Health Science took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for Medical Math. (Pictured following this paragraph; scroll to the end for more pictures!)   This is a very difficult contest with math problems that have to do with basic math, temperature conversions, IV calculations, admixture calculations, dilutions, concentrations, ratio & proportions and percentages, and business math.   District Winners headed to state for Medical Math are 1st place Oscar Leon, 2nd place Nicolas Hernandez, and 3rd place Zariya Scott.   Superior Perfect score district winners headed to state for technical skill are Isaac Martinez, Danahe Alcanter, Daniel Hernandez, Rebeca Arvizo, Kyla Thomas, Yessica Rodriguez, and Zariya Scott.


The Royal Welding Department competed in the hands-on welding competition as well as entering 2 student-built projects into the job exhibit competition. Our hands-on students were Aaron Parra and Jesus Alvarado, winning 2nd and 3rd place overall respectively. The student-built project teams consisted of Julian Serrano and Abraham Torrez who built a 500-gallon BBQ pit smoker and Jesus Alvarado, Eric Nino, and Diego Martinez who built a 1800’s black powder cannon replica. Both job exhibit entries earned a Superior Rating and qualified to compete at the state level in Corpus Christi. 

The Royal Machining Department had four Job Exhibit entries, with three of them earning a Superior Rating and qualified them to compete at the State Level in Corpus Christi.

Superior Rating, Miguel Hernandez- 11th grade machined a set of Top Spinners made of three different materials. (Aluminum, Mild Steel and Brass.)

Superior Rating, Antonio Morales- 12th grade machined three different Dice sizes. (½ inch,1 inch and 2. inch) Superior Rating, Andrew Jurado- 12th grade machined a four-inch aluminum Cube with three different inside bore diameters. Excellence Rating, Ismael Perez- 12th grade machined an aluminum Tungsten Welding Rod Holder.

The Royal SkillsUSA advisors would like to congratulate each of these students on their accomplishments and a job well done representing the Royal High School Career and Technical Education Department at the District 9 SkillsUSA contest.
