After five years of dedicated leadership, Royal ISD Superintendent Rick Kershner has announced his decision to retire in December 2025. Throughout his tenure, Kershner has played a pivotal role in advancing the district’s mission, fostering student success, and strengthening community engagement.

“This journey has been filled with meaningful work, personal growth, and, most importantly, the privilege of collaborating with an extraordinary group of people who make Royal ISD so special,” said Kershner. “I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together and I am grateful for the unwavering dedication of our students, staff, and community.”

Under Kershner’s leadership, Royal ISD has achieved several milestones, including:

✅ Implementation of Capturing Kids’ Hearts, earning National Showcase Recognition two years in a row
✅ Development of the district’s Strategic Direction, setting a clear vision for the future
✅ Passage of the 2023 Bond, securing resources for enhanced facilities and programs
✅ Hosting the 2025 Future Ready Superintendent Leadership Network meeting, positioning Royal ISD as a leader in innovation and excellence in education

While his decision to retire is bittersweet, Kershner remains committed to ensuring a smooth transition in leadership. Over the coming months, Royal ISD will work closely with students, staff, and the community to identify and onboard the district’s next superintendent.

The Royal ISD transition plan includes:

🔹 Selecting a search firm
🔹 Gathering input from students, staff, and community members to develop a superintendent profile
🔹 Selecting and narrowing candidates to a lone finalist
🔹 Finalizing the hiring and onboarding process
🔹 Facilitating a smooth transition with the incoming superintendent

“Royal ISD will always hold a special place in my heart, and I will forever cherish the memories we’ve created together,” Kershner added. “Though my role may change, I will always be cheering on our Falcons from the sidelines.”

Royal ISD will provide updates on the superintendent search process in the coming months.
